For the past century, the field of engineering has been one with the sciences in unearthing the infinite mysteries of the world. Since the beginning of time, humans have witnessed how the infinite discoveries and technological advancements in various fields have radically changed their lives. Even today, the influence of these discoveries is still felt—from the appliances that people use inside their homes to things they see when they get out of their doors. As scientists explore space and human existence, engineers are there to build, design tools and create systems that are necessary to convert knowledge into something tangible and utilizable. Today, the expertise of scientists and engineers continue to be partners in the great quest for understanding the mysteries of existence and making life easy for human beings. Here is a list of the ten greatest discoveries in the field of engineering:

10. Airplane

Also known as aeroplane, an airplane is a fixed-wing aircraft that was discovered by the Wright brothers. Airplanes are propelled forward through their propellers and jet engines and come in different sizes and wing configurations. They are used for the transportation of goods and people, in the military, for recreation and research. Though most airplanes are run by a pilot, there are airplanes today that are especially designed to be controlled by computers and remotes. According to history, the first artificial and self-propelled flying device was invented in 400BC by the Greeks. These flying devices deviated from the airplanes of the 18th century which featured fixed wings and separate systems for lift, propulsion and control. Modern airplanes have complex flight control systems and contain main controls that help the pilot in controlling the speed, altitude and direction of the flight.

9. Spacecraft

Usually used to refer to a vehicle, vessel or machine that flies in the outer space, a spacecraft is used for a broad range of purposes, such as for communication, meteorology, navigation, planetary and exploration. This type of vehicle enters the space on a sub-orbital flight and normally gets into closed orbits revolving around the Earth or other celestial bodies. Spacecrafts can be used to carry people as crew or passengers while others use robots either for space probes or to support scientific research. By design, most orbital spacecrafts re enter the earth and get divided into non-winged space capsules or winged space planes. The first artificial satellite that was used to probe space was Sputnik 1 and it was launched by the Soviet Union into an elliptical low Earth orbit.

8. Computer

A computer is a device that can be programmed to perform different arithmetic and logical operations. This device consists of a processing element called as the central processing unit (CPU) and a memory. Its CPU is the component that executes the arithmetic and logic operations that are inputted in them. The first computers were electronic digital computers that were developed sometime between 1940 and 1945. These computers were about the size of a spacious room and consumed power that went as much as the power consumed by hundreds of modern personal computers today. Most of the computers that are known today are based on integrated circuits and are more than a billion times more capable than the earliest computers. They are small enough to fit mobile devices such as mobile phones and industrial robots. Also, they occupy just a small fraction of the space occupied by the first electronic digital computers.

7. Automobile

An automobile or a car is a wheeled motor vehicle that is primarily used in the transportation of goods and people. It carries its own engine or motor and is designed to run on roads. A typical modern automobile has four wheels and has a seating for about one to eight people. It is estimated that today, the number of automobiles around the world today is about one billion and continues to increase rapidly, particularly in highly populated nations such as China and India. In 1672, the first steam-powered vehicle was designed and built by a man named Ferdinand Verbiest. His discovery was just about 65-cm long car toy that he especially made for the Emperor of China, and it could barely carry a driver or a single passenger. The first full-scale and self propelled automobile was discovered by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot sometime in 1769.

6. Telephone

Known as a telecommunications device that allows people from different vicinities and locations to have conversations, a telephone is an engineering discovery that converts human voice into electronic signals that are suitable for transmission via wires and cables over lengthy distances. Telephones allow these electronic signals to become as audible as possible to the user from the other line. Its name was derived from Greek words tele and phone, which mean far and voice, respectively. The first of its kind was invented in 1876 by renowned scientist Alexander Graham Bell, who made a patented telephone device that allowed people to talk directly with each other even when they are separated by large distances. Today, telephones are considered as one of the most valuable discoveries in the field of engineering because they are indispensable to businesses, households and the government.

5. Air Conditioning

An air conditioner is a major home appliance or mechanism that is especially designed to change the temperature and humidity of a closed area such as a room As its name suggests, it is basically used for cooling and it does this thru a process called refrigeration cycle, though in the cooling of buildings and motor vehicles, the process of evaporation is more common. In the field of construction, air conditioners come as a complete system that can be used for heating, ventilation as well as air conditioning. The concept of air conditioning was first use during the second century, when a Chinese inventor named Ding Huan of the Han Dynasty created a rotary fan to condition the air. This appliance contained seven wheels that were three meters each in diameter. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, on the other hand, introduced in 747 A.D. water powered fan wheels for air conditioning.

4. Highway

A public road or public way on land, the term highway refers to arterials that are controlled by a state or a provincial agency. The first modern highway systems were developed during the 20th century, along with the rising popularity of automobiles. The first limited access road was built in 1992 in Italy, while the construction of the first autobahn started in 1929 and was opened three years later in Cologne. The discovery of highways is one of the most important discoveries in the field of engineering as they reduce travel times relative to city or town streets as well as increase the chances for the transportation of people and goods. Modern highways are helpful in the reduction of commute and travel time as well as in the creation of new induced traffic demand.

3. Optical Fibre

Optical fibre is a transparent and flexible fibre that can be made either of glass or plastic. Today, this is known to serve different functions such as a wave guide or a light pipe. The design and application of optical fibres, dubbed as fibre optics, are works of science and engineering. Optical fibres are used these days in fibre optic communications which makes possible the transmission of sounds or signals over long distances through high bandwidths. Optical fibres made of metal wires are also used to carry signal with less loss and to make possible the immunization of electromagnetic interference. They can also be used for illumination to carry images. The principle of fibre optics was first introduced during the 1840s by Daniel Colladon and Jacques Banibet. A man named John Tyndall also demonstrated the first use of optical fibre for public lectures in 1852.

2. Television

A television or TV is a telecommunication device that works in the transmission and reception of moving images, whether monochrome or coloured. Its name was derived from Greek words tele and visio, which mean far and sight, respectively. The batch of manufactured televisions became commercially available in the late 1920’s. Since then, they have become common in homes and businesses and are used in advertising, broadcasting and entertainment. The first electromechanical television system was patented in 1884 by a man named Paul Gootlieb Nipkow. This was just about four years after the concept of electrically powered transmission of television images was introduced in America as “telephonoscope.”

1. Internet

A global system of interconnected computer networks, the Internet is a network of networks that is made up of millions of various private and public networks that are linked together through electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. This carries a broad range of information such as inter-linked hypertext documents. The concept of Internet began in the 1960’s, when research on packet switching was first conducted along with the development of packet switched networks. The term Internet was coined in 1974 to refer to internetworking, which was followed by the introduction of the concept of the Internet Protocol Suite (IPS) in 1982.

Motherhood is such a big word. More than the state of being a mother or the relationship that a mother has with her child, motherhood entails a deeper meaning that only mothers themselves can identify with. It brings meaning to the life of everyone, and it fuels the sense of connection and satisfaction between mothers and their children through love and guidance. No matter how great a blessing motherhood is for most mothers, however, there are still certain issues surrounding the word that almost every mother has to face blow by blow. Through the years, these motherhood issues have been bones of contention for most people, especially among those who are directly involved in the situation. These concepts are among the things that mothers should understand and master before they even get off course. Here is a list of the ten most controversial issues surrounding motherhood:

10. Home schooling

Home schooling or home-based education is common among mothers. Unlike schooling in a formal setting, home schooling involves staying at home and doing assignments given by a tutor. Though this practice has been adopted as an alternative form of education in other nations, most people still believe that going to a formal school is better than staying at home to study.

Some parents opt for home based education for their children for a broad range of reasons. Most of the time, mothers who opt for home schooling for their children are those who would not want their children to get bullied in crowded classrooms. Also, these mothers believe that it is better to study at home because it is more conducive for learning and it helps children achieve better focus when studying. This is hardly possible in a classroom setting, where 30-50 students normally crowd a single classroom and not everyone gets the same attention from the teacher.

9. Vaccination

Vaccination involves the administration of a vaccine to an infant to stimulate his immune system, thus allowing him to develop adaptive immunity to pathogens. The common notion is that when a child gets vaccinated, he is less likely to catch diseases in the future because he is already immune to those diseases. Sometime in the past, however, there was a doctor who conducted a study and published a book that stated that the development of autism and other neurological conditions stem from vaccination. Since then, a good number of mothers have been opting not to get their babies vaccinated when in reality, they should. Just recently, the medical license of the doctor who published the misleading study was taken from him because of the confusion that he spurred among mothers. Since his study was published, there came a rise in the number of communicable diseases afflicting children.

8. Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

Whether to use cloth diapers or disposable diapers has been a bone of contention among mothers. Both diapers have their own share of advantages and disadvantages, but mothers have got to pick the one whose advantages outweigh its disadvantages. Disposable diapers are reusable and create less waste than disposable diapers. Also, this kind of diaper is far less costly than disposable diapers because these diapers are washable while disposable diapers are not. For most mothers, however, disposable diapers are more convenient because they never have to wash every now and then. All they just have to do is to make sure that they never run out of stock. Also, they are more breathable and convenient, because with disposable diapers, they do not need to deal with complicated folds and pins. Some mothers who prefer cloth diapers, however, complain that disposable diapers increase the risk of diaper rash among their babies.

7. Discipline

Mothers have different concepts of discipline. For some, spanking their children is the right way to teach their children discipline, while for some, this is not the way to go. A recent study in the United States showed that more than one third of parents in the United States prefer to spank their kids so they will be forced to behave as their parents would want them to. Whenever a child does something wrong, what most parents do is spank the child so he would learn his lesson. Several mothers go up against this practice, saying that using physical force does not teach children discipline but fear towards their parents. These mothers believe that they can bring up their child into becoming well-rounded individuals even without having to inflict physical pain on them. Mothers can choose not to become violent in rearing their children, though this is case-sensitive.

6. Organic Products

Most mothers would prefer feeding their babies with organic products, believing that they are healthier. While it is true that eating organics allows one to reduce his exposure to chemicals, many experts believe that it is not always so. In fact, a large group of pediatricians recently revealed that parents who buy organic food for their children are actually wasting money. Experts say that to believe that organic products are more nutritious than non-organic products is nothing but a false notion because the nutritional differences between conventional food and organic food are far more minimal than most mothers think. Most mothers also use organic milk to feed their babies believing that it is more nutritious than the processed ones, when in fact, it is not worth it. Mothers who are working on a limited budget should not go for organic because they are costly. Those who have more than enough budget argue that organic is still better, though.

5. Attachment Parenting

Attachment parenting refers to the tendency of a child to develop or form very strong emotional bond with his mother. One of the practices that lead to attachment parenting are co-sleeping with babies until they come of age, extended breast feeding and baby wearing. Some mothers believe that practicing attachment parenting allows them to produce healthier and better nurtured babies and children. On the other hand, those who oppose the practice believe that it only delays the socio emotional development and well-being of the child because he tends to become too much dependent on his mother. Today, the population of mothers is halved by this practice. Those who are up for attachment parenting argue that the practice is nothing but a simple demonstration of love, while those who think otherwise argue that this is detrimental to the development of a child and will do no good to him.

4. Breast-feeding vs. Bottle-feeding

Determining whether to breastfeed or bottle-feed her baby is one of the first decisions that an expectant mother makes. Because the very first thing that a baby looks for as he gets out of her mother’s womb is milk, this is one of the most basic decisions that a woman makes as she enters motherhood. The common notion is that breast milk is the most valuable source of nutrition for babies because it helps defend the baby from harmful infections as well as protect him from allergies and other chronic conditions. But working mothers would prefer bottle-feeding their babies because they need to earn money and go to work. These mothers cannot afford to stay at home and breastfeed their babies the entire day, unless the earnings of their husbands are enough to provide for the needs of the family.

3. Scheduled Caesarean Sections

Photo Source: http://www.birthstoriesondemand.com/storage/CSection%20birth%20stories%20birth%20stories%20on%20demand.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1310691959363

Cesarean section is a surgical procedure that is performed when a mother gives birth, characterized by one or more incisions made on her abdomen and uterus to deliver her baby. Normally, this procedure is the last resort when vaginal delivery poses death risk either on the mother or the child. Nowadays, however, some mothers who are capable of normal vaginal delivery would still opt for cesarean section because it is less painful. In fact, celebrities are known to have scheduled caesarean sections even months before the due date of the baby. This practice has been emulated by several mothers today, believing that this makes the birth of the child more convenient. Those who go for vaginal delivery argue that those who go for C-sections are harder to recover compared to those who go for normal delivery.

2. Natural Birth

Though cesarean sections are growing in popularity these days, giving birth the natural way is still generally the most preferred of most mothers. Mothers who have laboured and gave birth to their babies without the need for an epidural or medications are often prouder than those who underwent procedures because they were able to suffer the real pain of giving birth. However, some mothers are just not healthy enough to go through the natural way of giving birth so doctors prefer having them incised. Mothers who argue that those who go for c-sections are weaker should understand that what may be good for them may not be good for another.

1. Cord Blood Banking

PhotoSource: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wViheaKHk0E/TzaQWKi5a2I/AAAAAAAAAa4/01h9Xgpowtc/s1600/CordBloodBank-full.jpg

Cord blood banking is a practice wherein the blood from the umbilical cord of a baby is saved and stored in a facility for possible use in the future. The umbilical cord of a baby is the major source of stem cells, which are used today the way bone marrow cells are used to treat different kinds of illness, particularly leukemia. This is a more guaranteed match compared to a donor. Cord blood banking is a choice that mothers make. Most mothers oppose the idea of cord blood banking because it is too expensive, while those who are up for the practice claim that this practice is life-saving.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and all children may now be thinking of the best gift to give to their moms. While giving her a bouquet of roses or a card may be a sound idea, one cannot deny the fact that roses and cards are generally a piece of a cliché. And while it is quite typical for moms to receive cards and roses on special occasions, there is a huge tendency for them to deem such gifts more of unremarkable than exceptional. Giving them material gifts may also be a good idea, but not all sons and daughters have enough in their pockets to afford items that their moms can surely appreciate. If you are looking for inexpensive ways to make Mother’s Day extra special, renting a DVD and watching a movie together with your mom and the rest of the family could be the best option you have. Aside from the fact that it is easy on the pocket, it is out of the ordinary since it is not every day that family members get to have some quality time together. Here is a list of the ten best movies to watch on Mother’s Day:

10. Mother India (1957)

A melodramatic movie about an impoverished woman who raised her son with dignity despite life’s challenges, Mother India was directed by Indian director Mehboob and starred Indian artists Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar. This movie was a remake of the movie of Mehboob Khan entitled Aurat which was staged in 1940 and featured a poor woman who struggled in raising her sons and eventually went on top of an evil money lender. Mother India is a good choice for Mother’s Day since it demonstrates the goddess-like example of mothers. Even today, this film is ranked among the top grossing movies of India and is often described as “an all-time Indian blockbuster.”

9. Steel Magnolias (1989)

Shown in year 1989, Steel Magnolias was directed by Robert Harling and featured the story of the friendship of a bunch of women from a parish in the Natchitoches, Louisiana. This movie was starred by Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts and was based on a play that was staged two years prior to its showing, entitled Steel Magnolias. The director of the film, Robert Harling, was inspired to do the film following the death of his sister. He entitled the movie that way to suggest that women can be as delicate as magnolia flowers though they can also be as hard-hitting as steel.

8. Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)

Directed by Shawn Levy, Cheaper by the Dozen was a story of a father who lived with his wife and his dozen kids while he was experiencing a grave struggle in his new job. This American family comedy film took its title from the biography of a man named Frank Bunker Gilbreth and his wife Lillian Maller Gilbreth who had a problem raising their twelve children. Both the title and the concept of a family having a dozen kids were greatly inspired by the story of the couple, though it greatly deviated from the original Cheaper by the Dozen book. The film was released in year 2003 and was produced by the 20th Century Fox.

7. Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974)

Directed by Alan J. Pakula, Sophie’s Choice featured the story of a woman who survived the Nazi concentration camps and was able to find a reason to live her life the way she used to in the character of a man named Nathan. In this film, Sophie was a Polish immigrant who fell in love with a sparkling lover and lived under the same roof as a young writer from Brooklyn. Sophie’s Choice won Meryl Streep one of her earliest Academy Awards for Best Actress as it is considered even today as one of her finest performances in the silver screen.

5. Gypsy (1962)

4. Forrest Gump (1994)

A popular 1994 American epic comedy-drama romance film that featured Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Robin Wright and Gary Sinise, Forrest Gump was about a man named Forrest Gump—a not so intelligent man who accidentally got involved in several historic moments. It generally depicted several decades in the life of the naive and stupid Forrest Gump who also happened to witness and influence some of the most defining events of the 20th century. This movie was well received by critics and became one of the top grossing films of the 20th century. It was later adapted into a television series which expanded to several countries worldwide. In total, Forrest Gump sold more than 8 million copies around the world.

3. Erin Brockovich (2000)

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Erin Brockovich featured the story of an unemployed single mother who eventually became a legal assistant. The main character in this movie was able to bring down a giant California-based power company that was accused of polluting the water supply of the city. Erin Brockovich starred Albert Finney, Dawn Didawick, David Brisbin and Julia Roberts who played the role of Erin. In real life, this character fought against the US West Coast Energy Corporation Pacific Gas and Electrical Company. This film can be an excellent choice for Mother’s Day since it demonstrates the empowerment of women in the 20th century.

2. Volver (2006)

A 2006 Spanish thriller film that was written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, Volver was about the story of a mother who died and returned to her home town in spirit as she sought to fix the tough situation she was not able to resolve within her family when she was still alive. Starred by actress Penelope Cruz, this movie featured a family of women from Madrid, including a working woman named Raimunda and her daughter Paula, as well as the mother of Raimunda and the acting head of the family, Irene. Volver successfully tackled several themes such as sexual abuse, death and magic realism and was originally adopted from the film entitled The Flower of My Secret.

1. Terms of Endearment (1983)

Directed by James L. Brooks, Terms of Endearment was a drama film that was shown in 1983 and was adapted from the Larry Mc Murtry novel that starred Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson and Shirley MacLaine. The movie featured the three decades of relationship between a mother named Aurora Greenway and her daughter Emma. Terms of Endearment is the best movie to watch this Mother’s Day as it tackles how far a mother can go for the love of her daughter.

Though movies featuring penguins aren’t really a trend these days, movies of such themes that were shown years ago are still among the top favorites of kids today. Penguins are quite adorable and incredible creatures, and seeing them playing roles in movies is an exceptionally pleasurable experience. What makes penguin movies even more special is that compared to dog movies and other animal movies; they entail plots and experiences that are new to moviegoers. This is primarily because it is not every day that people encounter penguins and get to observe how these animals comport themselves. In celebration of the World Penguin Day today, here is a list of the top ten penguin movies of all time.

1. Surf’s Up

An American comedy film staged in 2007, this Ash Brannon and Chris Buck film features a teenage rock hopper penguin who was determined to win the most important competition in the world of penguin surfing to prove his fellow penguins that he was more than just the “surfing fool” they credited him for. Together with his chicken friend, he joined the Big Z surfing competition in Pen Gu Island. Surf’s Up was produced in 2002 by Sony Pictures Animation and featured the voices of some of the biggest Hollywood stars such as James Woods, Jon Heder, Shia LaBeouf and Jeff Bridges. It generally received positive reviews from movie critics, saying its story was “certified fresh.”

A French documentary film that featured the annual journey of the Emperor of Penguins of the Antarctica Region, March of the Penguins was directed by renowned director Luc Jacquet and was co-produced by Bonne Pioche and the National Graphic Society. It took the staff of March of the Penguins one year to shoot the film, since it involved the breeding age of penguins where they leave their natural habitat, the ocean, to journey to their own breeding grounds to court and mate with a fellow penguin. In 2005, the film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and several other awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Online Film Critics Society Awards.

The story featured Mr. Popper, a poor house painter who resided in the Stillwater town with his family in the 1930’s. Years of residing in that place, the family met and took possession of a penguin which they named Captain Cook. Following their adoption of this male penguin, the family of Mr. Popper got another female penguin fresh from the zoo that eventually mated with Captain Cook. As the couple penguins had a total of 10 baby penguins, the Poppers family, threatened that the penguins might eat them, had to think of ways on how they could get rid of the thriving family of Captain Cook. The film adaptation of Mr. Popper’s Penguins was directed by Mark Waters and starred renowned actor Jim Carrey.

An American parody of the French documentary film entitled March of the Penguins, Farce of the Penguins is an award winning film that conquered the silver screen in 2007, featuring Samuel L. Jackson as its narrator and two other major characters dubbed by writer and director Bob Saget and Lewis Black. The film featured a wide array of slapstick talents and R-rated commentaries for live footages of penguins in Antarctica. The story was about a group of penguins who journeyed 70 miles towards their breeding grounds to find their mates and sleep with them. Somewhere along the way, the main characters, Carl and Jimmy, met a penguin named Marcus who loved bragging about his huge boom stick and bullying those who have small ones. The film generally featured the story of the three buddies towards their self-indulgent power of procreation ritual in Antarctica.

It featured a little penguin named Mumble who had a terribly bad singing voice but was best at tap dancing—something that no other penguin could match. His story taught his viewers that uniqueness is more of a gift than a burden. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and a lot more.

An annual international beauty competition that showcases the most beautiful women in the world, Miss Universe is among the most watched international beauty pageants in the world, along with Miss World and Miss International. This prestigious beauty pageant features the impeccable beauty and wit of women from all corners of the earth. It has undergone several changes in its format since its inception, but up until today, the question and answer segment remains as dreaded as it has always been. This segment places the top candidates in a global fishbowl and principally determines their fate in the pageant. Though Miss Universe candidates are often stereotyped as women of beauty and brains, jumpiness occasionally takes its toll on them, causing them to articulate answers that are rather dumb and nonsensical. Here is a list of the 10 worst answers in the history of Miss Universe.

10. “I believe they can learn a lot, because thanks to us women, the men are here in this beautiful theatre, seeing this beautiful contest and applauding me because I am a beautiful woman!”

This was the easy answer of Miss Venezuela 1995 Alicia Machado to the question, “What can men learn from women?” during the final question and answer portion of Miss Universe 1996 in Las Vegas. Most of the viewers deemed her answer daft, but fate proved to have favoured Machado as she was crowned Miss Universe that night. While majority of the audience found her answer ludicrous, the judges deemed it worth the Miss Universe crown.

9. “I think all the experiences we have in life we just do it, we just over pass all that and I remember that I tried to compete in a pageant in Miss Puerto Universe once and I didn’t make it and now, oh my God! I have the opportunity again and I just tried and I just said like, this is for me, I think this is the moment and I did it. I never surrendered and I think that is very important, don’t surrender what you have and just go ahead and take hold of what you want.”

This was the equally emotive and ecstatic remark of Puerto Rican candidate Cynthia Olavarria during Miss Universe 2005, as a response to the question “What one failure in your life did you most learn from?” Made modest sense, but she landed 1st runner-up.

8. “First, I’d like to start off by saying that every experience, no matter what it is, good or bad, you’ll learn from it. That’s just life. But something I’ve done that I’ve probably regretted would be picking on my siblings growing up because you appreciate them so much more when you are older; you get closer with your family. Everybody fights with their siblings, right? But I don’t regret it.”

After throwing this as a response to the question “What is something that you have done that you will never do again?,” and being crowned Miss Universe 2012, Miss Olivia Culpo and her victory emerged as a sticking point among Miss Universe critics.

7. “All the experiences that I have so far in whole, uhm, my, uhm, experiences have given me fame and I feel like famous. There are though other ways to feel famous and to be famous and those are intelligence and also beauty. Thank you.”

This was what Miss Marigona Dragusha of Kosovo responded to the question of judge Dean Cain, “Pop superstar Justin Timberlake once said that the worst thing about being famous is the invasion of your privacy. What is it about fame that makes many people, including you, want to be famous?” during Miss Universe 2009, where she came in as 2nd runner-up. Not a bad ending for such a mediocre answer.

6. “Well, I’m a human being, I’m a girl, and I don’t know how is it to be a fire or a water, and from that reason I really don’t have an answer on this question because I’m a human being, I’m a girl, which has an emotion, and fire and water doesn’t have.”

This was the overly literal answer of Ms. Serbia and Montenegro candidate, Sanja Papic, to the question “If you could be either water or fire, which would you be and why?” during the coronation night of Miss Universe 2003. Though she came in as 3rd runner-up, many believed she could have done better had she not given such an awful remark.

5. “In my 22 years of existence, I can say that there is nothing major, major, I mean, problem that I’ve done in my life. I am very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving me. Thank you so much that I am here. Thank you! Thank you so much!”

This was the remark that left Philippine candidate Venus Raj under the glare of publicity even months after the coronation night of Miss Universe 2010. The public deemed that the answer was incongruous to the question she was supposed to answer– “What is one big mistake in your life and what did you do to make it right?” The “major, major” remark has been a popular catchphrase in various social media sites, and even appeared on commercial shirts and tote bags.

4. “I would eat everything in the world. You do not understand! I would eat everything twice!”

This was how Miss Brook Antoinette Mahealani Lee, crowned Miss Universe 1997, answered Miss Universe 1997’s final question—“If there were no rules in your life for one day, and you could do something outrageous, what would that be?” Her victory spurred debates among viewers, but judges remained firm that it was Lee who deserved to win the title.

3. “When I say wrong things.”

This was the brief answer of Miss Russia 2001, Oxana Fedrova, to the question “What makes you blush?” during the question and answer portion of Miss Universe 2002. Controversy loomed ahead for this Russian beauty, as critics believed that her remark was not enough for her to deserve the crown. But the verdict of the judges was final—Fedrova’s answer was simple, concise and unpretentious, and that was more than enough for her to deserve the Miss Universe title. Just months after the coronation, however, she gave up the crown to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer.

2. “I think when you down the women can make you up, and I think the women can be said that I have advice for you if you way up, you have to be nice with people, including women, so when you down, women can be nice with you.”

Miss Indonesia 2009 Gory Sandioriva became the talk of the town after giving this silly statement as an answer to the question “What is the best advice you can give to men?” during the coronation night of Miss Universe 2010. Her hardly comprehensible answer invited criticisms from social media users, saying that she could have won the crown had she never dared to answer in English, which unfortunately came out broken.

1. “I think that any leys there are in constitution or in life, are already made. I think that we should have, uh, a straight way to go in our similar, or, eh, in our own lives as is this. For example, I’m a surfer, and I think that the best way that I can take is the wave that I wait for it. So please do our only, eh, law that we can do. Thank you, Vegas!”

Dubbed as the worst answer to have ever been uttered by a Miss Universe candidate, this unintelligible remark was given by Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser Quintero during the question and answer portion of Miss Universe 2012. She earned several criticisms for not having chosen to answer the question “If you could make a new law, what would it be?” using her native tongue, Spanish.

Who among you guys have never watched cartoons at least even once in your lifetime? Even though such characters have been fictionally made, usually created by imagination being materialized in paper, they have made an impact in our daily endeavors, even influenced us in understanding certain matters. There is surely more to a cartoon character than just his or her looks, where the jokes, the voice, the laughter, and the gestures get the best of their viewers, making them a part of one’s identity. Just who are the top 10 most loved cartoon characters of all time? Read this list and you’ll come to know those who have been cherished by generations both young and old.

10. Rocky and Bullwinkle

Rocky the flying squirrel and Bullwinkle the moose have found their way into children’s hearts due to the kind of adventures they get themselves into. Oftentimes, and most kids reminisce those days when fairy tales have been distorted and they do their thing to save the day, and make things right in fairyland. The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show began way back in 1959 and ended in 1964. However, despite that many generations have not seen it, many children know of this tandem due to the laughter they brought to those who were born in the 60s.

9. Garfield

Who would not know this crazy aleck, witty talking, smarty-pants, sarcastic, lazy, and hungry housecat? Garfield, just like its real life counterparts, does not talk and rarely purrs. However, he speaks his mind so loud that you will have an idea of what he will do next, whether he would pester his master, John, or play along with the housedog, Odie. Before the orange cat was seen in TV screens, he first appeared in a comic strip back in June 19, 1978, which was created by Jim Davis. The fame was so great that he was known worldwide, which made it easy for the two latest CG movies to garner huge ticket sales everywhere. Even until today, the franchise can still be seen with clothes, stationeries, notebooks, and other school supplies.

8. Wile E. Coyote

One-half of the tandem together with the fast-running Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote has been well known for being a flop when trying to capture the hasty bird. In fact, as you watch over 40 episodes of their chase in the wilderness, you could see the coyote purchase goods from Acme such as rockets, roller skates, bombs, giant slings, anvils, and even paste, just to be able to catch him. The products is just one part of the funny story. The other hilarious part has something to do with the blueprints he gets in order to create the contraption that would make the perfect catch, which fails 99.99% of the time. See the law of physics defied in this great chase that would seemingly have no end.

7. Popeye

Kids hate green leafy vegetables such as broccoli and spinach. But when the comic strip and the cartoon show Popeye was viewed by kids of all ages, they have learned one lesson, that vegetables are healthy and good to eat as it makes a person strong. This is why Popeye has been loved not only by children, but by parents too, because it became easier for them to feed kids with those vegetables considered as yucky and gross. The exploits of this powerful sailor began back in January 1979 as part of the Thimble Theater comics. Characters such as Olive Oyl, Brutus, and Wimpy had made an impact in the lives of many people. They had even appeared in movies, video games, and was even loved in the form of toys, dolls, and other merchandise.

6. Tom and Jerry

If there is one cartoon that children loved watching, even in the passing of many days and years, having it still being aired in certain cable channels, Tom and Jerry is one title that’s up in the list. This cat and mouse tandem showed to the world how terrible it is when a rodent and a feline chase each other, thus fortifying the chaotic relationship between two real-life enemies. Even if it was first run in 1940, it still appeals to the masses today, knowing that this love and hate connection will remain the same, even if they are seen in space, under the water, in the beach, or just in the home.

5. Charlie Brown

Charles M. Schulz has been very successful in creating a character that experiences many failures in life, as seen in the life story of Charlie Brown, the main protagonist in the comic strip Peanuts. He can be described as a child that has many dreams and aspirations, but a failure in all of them. Despite of being a guy that has bad luck, no matter what kind of activity he is engaged in, Charlie is still smart and thoughtful, while being doubtful and insecure. This has been the same guy since 1947, even in the last days when he was last read in a comic strip sometime in 2000.

4. Fred Flintstone

Yabadabadoo! This is what you hear most of the time when you are watching Hanna-Barbera’s The Flinstones, with Fred Flinstone heading the family with his wife, Wilma, daughter, Pebbles, and Dino, his doggy dinosaur. Oh and don’t forget his best friend, Barney Rubble and his family. People loved watching this cartoon because it gives you a picture of what life is like in the stone age where dinosaurs roam over the earth, and machines do not exist. What’s funnier is that you will see how modern lifestyle looks like, being mixed with primitive and old machinery and mechanics. Do you remember seeing a boulder car being driven by foot?

3. Homer Simpson

Homer Simpson is considered the original family guy with his wife, Marge, and three kids, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. This family living in Springfield is nothing like you average family. However, Homer is an epitome of most dads that live their life at work and spends time with friends. He loves donuts, he is working at the nuclear plant, and has a nice set of friends that can be considered a “formidable crew”. Could you still refresh in your minds that he first appeared on national TV back in 1989, with that expression “D’oh!” showing his frustration and reaction in many things.

2. Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse is no stranger to anyone, especially those who have been influenced by Walt Disney, one way or another. Famous for being the mascot of Walt Disney, Mickey has been seen in the cartoon world since 1928 where he debuted in the Steamboat Willie where the antagonist Pete, along with his pet dog Pluto first appeared. He is oftentimes associated with friends such as Donald Duck, Goofy, Daisy Duck, and of course, his significant other, Minnie. You also have seen him in the movie musical Fantasia where he was a janitor that pretended to be a wizard when his master was away. From then until now, Mickey can still be found in the Disney Channel, in toys, and other merchandise.

1. Bugs Bunny

“Eh, what’s up doc?” is a famous catchphrase that’s known all over the world, where only a certain rabbit is remembered with that line, while chewing a carrot and irritating characters like Elmer Fudd or Samity Sam. Bugs Bunny is taken to be the most loved cartoon character for his level of wit, genius, and creativity. He knows very much how to crack jokes, and he often makes a fool of everyone he comes across with, even with Porky Pig or Daffy Duck. He was born back in July 27, 1940 under the baseball field of the Brooklyn Dodgers, inside his rabbit home. His artist Tex Avery and voice actor Mel Blanc were able to create a character that can just be taken as adorable and funny.

Forbes has released in mid-March 2013, the most influential celebrities of 2013. Let’s see who have retained the same standing from the ranking that was released by Forbes on February 21, 2012. Get to know the ratings if there’s an increased or downslides based on the previous results and the current values. Who have dropped off from the list, and who have successfully noted for the influences that they have made for the last 12 months. Of course, you would want to know if Oprah Winfrey still holds the crown on these top 10 most influential celebrities of 2013.

10. Clint Eastwood – 36% Influential Rating

This spot belongs to Bill Cosby last year who had 39% Influential rating, and it’s expected since he has not been visible to any TV shows, but could only be followed through a popular social media, twitter. His unnoticed presence since the release of the 2012 influential celebrities continued even at the beginning of this year. He was replaced by the 82-year old politician, actor, producer, composer, director, and producer, Clint Eastwood, where he garnered 36% rate of influence.

9. Suze Orman – 37% Influential Rating

Her whole name is Susan Lynn Orman, who was a known financial advisor, television host, motivational speaker, and an American Author. She is populary known as Suze, a 61-year old strong woman from Chicago, who is married to Kathy Travis. She made that revelation of her unique and special relationship with same-sex in 2007 for the last 7 years when she was featured at the New York Time Magazine, where she affirmed that she is a lesbian. Amidst of that, she gained the crowd and following from the people who were in the same relationship. This was once the place of Bono who is now up to the 8th spot on this year’s list.

8. Bono – 37% Influential Rating

Everyone is aware that he is an active activist, but this 52-year old singer from Ireland who serves as the lead vocalist of U2 band is also a venture capitalist. He’s association and active participation in humanitarian activities is one of the passions that he has. In fact, he is taking advantage of his celebrity status to be an advocate in fighting social justice not just in his country, but globally. One of the things that he supports the most is to end the poverty, hunger, and diseases. He might be up to number 8 ranking on this year’s list, but he had 41% influential rating last year being in the number 9 spot.

7. Barbara Walters – 37% Influential Rating

She was not included in last year’s list of influential celebrities, but this spot was Stephen Hawking who had 42% influential rating. Now, the classy and sophisticated 83-year old author, broadcast journalist, and TV personality took the 7th spot this year. Her age does not hinder her to continue her career despite that she made a rant about it on “The View”, but later denied that she would retire soon, and not even in 2014.

6. Mehmet Oz – 40% Influential Rating

He has retained and maintained his number 6th spot since last year. The only difference is influential rating recorded, which was 2 points higher last year, and it went down to 40% this year. Although people still recognized the fact of his recognition and visibility because of Oprah who served as his mentor until he took off from her shadow in 2007 when The Dr. Oz Show was launched in 2007, where he got his own cognizance. Moreover, it’s even boosted because of the You books. His whole name is Mehmet Cengiz Oz, who is also an author, and an American & Turkish cardiothoracic doctor.

Who would not know George Lucas and his relationship with the most-hailed science fiction movie series of all time, Star Wars? Taken as a trend-setter by Forbes’ for his revolutionary contribution on how sci-fi movies should be presented, George Lucas has directed, filmed, and produced other titles that changed the viewing habits of movie watchers forever. He was also responsible for creating Indiana Jones thanks to his collaborative efforts together with another famous director, Steven Spielberg. Star Wars is still famous even today, for creating a pop culture that binds the generation of the past with the present, all with the love for Luke and Anakin Skywalker, R2D2, and C3PO, Chewbacca, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and of course, Yoda. Though the creative director dropped down 2% from 2012, he still retained his spot due to new lister, Martin Scorsese.

4. Ron Howard – 41% Influential Rating

Hailed by Forbes’ Magazine to be a person whose influence is recognized for being down to earth and humble, despite his prestigious achievements, Ron Howard has been in the showbiz industry ever since he played as a child actor to his current days as a noted film producer and director. What influenced him greatly was his acting career during the 1960s when he was included in The Andy Griffith Show as Opie Taylor. Due to his experience, he was able to direct films that can be considered interesting and thought-provoking, aside from being entertaining and amusing. He directed famous movies such as the Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, and others.

3. Martin Scorsese – 42% Influential Rating

Known to be another prominent figure in the world of movie production and directing, Martin Scorsese has been included in Forbes’ list of the most influential people for being dynamic. Being a man of change, growth, and development in the movie industry, his craft is known to expand and improve that he has even been credited as one of the best directors of all time, even comparable to that of what Steven Spielberg has achieved. Marty’s success were all thanks to movies such as Goodfellas, The Departed, Hugo, and other classic like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. In his passion for his craft, he even instituted The Film Foundation and the World Cinema Foundation, organizations that protect and preserve the heritage of the filmmaking industry. Ron Howard went points down from 43% to 41%, thus giving this spot for Mr. Scorsese.

2. Steven Spielberg – 47% Influential Rating

All of Steven Spielberg’s movies can be considered a revelation in a sense that you are brought into a world of new and refreshing ideas whenever you watch his well-produced films. Whether it was Avatar or ET back in the 1980s, he never ceased to amaze his viewers by inculcating ideas and principles that not only entertain the eyes, but also teach the mind and the heart to change something in themselves, even before the movie presentation ends. Some of his most influential works are Jaws, Jurassic Park, Memoirs of a Geisha, Men in Black, AI (Artificial Intelligence), Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, and many other award-winning films under his belt. Michael J. Fox owned this spot last year, but is nowhere to be found for 2013. Now Stevie is on the 3rd spot, having only 44% back in 2012.

1. Oprah Winfrey – 48% Influential Rating

She is noted for being famous in her self-titled show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, which has achieved the highest ratings for one of the longest periods in TV broadcasting history, from 1986 to 2011. Because of her efforts in helping people on and off the air, she has been given the title of being “the most influential woman in the world”. Her philanthropic activities have reached different people far and wide, whether it was providing financial and temporal assistance in remote areas, or spiritual and emotional support while her show was ongoing. Her selflessness and compassion eventually gave her the break that no other daytime talk show host had; even launching and operating her very own production company. Despite of being at the top, her influential rating drop 1% from 2012.

You have heard of famous couples, pairs, and tandems that have made and shaped history as it is today. But aside from dynamic duos and love teams, or even arch rivals, there are also threesomes that have established their names in entertainment, literature, music, and even in religion, in the course of history, even older than what people think. Who are these famous people might be? Read this list of the top 10 most famous trios in history and you will see individuals that would make you remember how life is today, threefold.

10. Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras

Known as The Three Tenors, the late Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras were seen singing in concerts, football games, in operas, and other staged performances. They were so famous that many of the people who did not appreciate opera music have been delighted into the craft, thanks to these three that amped classic singing into a whole new level. What began as a collaboration of the three in raising funds for José Carreras’ International Leukaemia Foundation, grew into a series of concerts that lasted from 1990 until 2003. Their famous hits include “Nessun Dorma” and “O Sole Mio”, which would make you appreciate their unique kind of music.

9. Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger

This famous trio became the talk of the town when the popular book Harry Potter by writer J. K. Rowling took the world by storm. The said published material was a staple to most kids in junior high, becoming interested in the world of wizardry, sorcery, and magic, as portrayed by Rowling in picturing Harry’s life in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter was able to make friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger on his first few days at Hogwarts, making the trio inseparable no matter the kind of adventure and situation they could get themselves in. The team’s popularity also expanded in the movies, seeing the trio grow together and facing the good times and bad times of their lives.

8. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore

You have heard these three chipmunks sing their songs in the airwaves, singing to the tunes of “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth”, and other hits like “Christmas Don’t Be Late”, “Macarena”, and more. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are three singing chipmunks that are being handled and taken care of by manager, Dave Seville. These guys have been created by Ross Bagdasarian Sr., where he sings all three voices in different pitches and then speeds them up to sound tiny and high-pitched. It was very surprising that the chipmunks, including Dave, and even the Chippettes have been successful, despite of the simple trick that can easily be done these days. From the music scene, to cartoons, and even in 3D movies, the singing trio made their way to success, even beyond imagination.

7. Huey, Dewey, and Louie

First known in the Silly Symphonies comic strip created by Disney being published in newspapers, Huey, Dewey, and Louie appeared as Donald Duck’s nephews even as early as October 17, 1937. It is also surprising to know that the names of these three ducklings came from three animators that worked at the Disney Studio, namely Huey Long, Thomas Dewey, and Louis Schmitt. The nephews also appeared at a time when Mickey Mouse’s nephews, Morty and Ferdie Fieldmouse have been introduced. They also became noted in the Disney TV animation series, Ducktales, where their association with Uncle Scrooge McDuck was apparent in most of its episodes. Even though they look alike, you could easily identify them with Huey wearing red, Dewey wearing blue, and Louie being green.

6. Moe, Larry, and Curly

Even though the Three Stooges act was more famous back in the earlier years from 1925 until the 1980s , the acts of Moe, Larry, and Curly defined a different form of comedy, something that is more noisy, a bit nonsense, and a whole lot of funny. Back during the early days of the show, Ted Healy named the show “Ted Healy and His Southern Gentlemen”, “Ted Healy and His Stooges”, and “Ted Healy and His Three Lost Souls”, using the characters of Moe, Larry, and Shemp. However, everything changed when Shemp left to perform solo, and Curly came into the picture, which was also the time that the title “The Three Stooges” was created. Lots of movies and shorts have been created because of their funny antics, which made many generations laugh their hearts out. However, due to old age and disease-stricken characters, the Stooges ended their act sometime in the 80s.

5. Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson

How does it feel to receive assignments and missions from a boss that you have never seen before? Or much worse, you could only hear him through a speakerphone or squawk box? Well, you just have to ask the Angels to figure that out for you. Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson were known to be Charlie’s Angels, the original versions of Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore, who have adapted the 1970s action series on TV into movies. It was a good thing that the title of the series is as it is today. Otherwise, viewers may not be interested watching the show seeing that Alley Cats are making their way into solving missions from someone who does not show his face. If it was not for Charles Townsend, these three girls who graduated from the Los Angeles Police Academy could have lived their lives as normal policewomen, not enjoying the life of being private investigators. At least, mission briefing would not be as mysterious as it is, thanks to Bosley who’s there to address different concerns.

4. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis

The Three Musketeers, namely Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, are friends that are bound together in fulfilling their responsibilities as members of the Musketeer of the Guard. In fact, when d’Artagnan was about to enter the order of the musketeers, he had to duel each of them due to his planned heroic acts, which is actually the very role that was supposed to be played by the three. Nevertheless, he was able to gain their respect, which makes d’Artagnan included in the group of three. Famous for the lines “All for one, one for all” which was put up by d’Artagnan, the Three Musketeers have found their way into liking the fourth member. And together, they have fought to vanquish evil, as was written by the creator of the novel, Alexander Dumas.

3. Peter, James, and John

Peter, James, and John were among the first few apostles that have been called right after Jesus Christ fasted for forty days in beginning his ministry, after overcoming the temptations of Satan and receiving instructions from angels sent by His Father. They met in Galilee while Peter and Andrew were catching fishes. Jesus invited the two to be fishers of men, and the two followed him, leaving their nets behind. James and John also received the same invitation and left everything, including their father. Peter, James, and John were not only considered to be prominent members of the apostleship for only being called the first. In fact, there are many important events in Christ’s life that involved the presence of these three including Jesus’ transfiguration and His atonement in the Mount of Olives in Gethsemane.

2. Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar

Three men that have been spoken in the bible as the Wise Men of the East, although there have never been accounts that the said number of these wise men were actually three. However, the reference to such number has been due to the gifts that were given to Jesus Christ after his birth in Bethlehem where gold, myrrh, and frankincense were presented. The names of Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar were also never found within the texts of the scripture, attributing everything to tradition from various countries near the place where “the East” is located, which could be attributed to locations such as Persia, Arabia, and India. Their roles were cut short when an angel appeared to them in a dream, warning them to never return to King Herod. Thus, they have gone their way and were never heard of again.

1. The Father, The Son, and the Holy Ghost

Often referred to as the Trinity on most denominations, God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost have different functions while remaining one in purpose. While some are claiming that these three divine beings are all substances of but one God, one particular passage in the Bible disproves such claim, seeing that they have appeared all at the same time in order to fulfill their purpose. During the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by his cousin, John the Baptist, it has been written that after Jesus was baptized, being immersed in and out of the water, a voice from heaven was heard saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him”. After hearing the voice, the Holy Ghost appeared in the form of a dove, signifying the divinity of the said event. Though they have been seen but once, the existence of these three beings mark the foundation of faith of all Christendom, all over the world.

The best action adventure games are those that do not only have some non-stop action shooting sprees but must have the ultimate adrenaline kick for all players. Aside from great graphics and good storylines, players nowadays look for a combination of deadly conflicts and a high dosage of adventure that also requires skills in problem solving. Take a look at the top ten best action games that are not only action-packed, but also require your tactical skills and ability to plan ahead.

10. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

This action video game was originally titled Metal Gear Solid: Rising in 2009, which was supposed to be the interquel between the Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and the Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. However, the 9th game of the series was set in a plot four years after the event of the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. In this game, you will take the character of the cyborg ninja, Raiden, in his battles against the private military company Desperado Enterprises. This katana-wielding ally of Solid Snake was initially playable in his “white” form based in his appearance in the ‘Guns of the Patriots’ where he wears a white armor. However, at some point in the game he switched into a powerful “black” cyborg, which draws extra energy from “Zan-Datsu” kills, though you can alter his appearance unlike in the other series. This action-oriented game focuses more on sword fighting and sophisticated cutting defense system to beat the enemies. Though Raiden has his high-frequency blade as his main weapon, he can also wield other blades that he can obtain from defeating the game’s bosses.

9. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Though it received negative reaction from its first launched in September 2010, this MMORPG was re-launched again with its original game setting, traditions and story but with new graphics engine, data structure and server. It was revamped with new interface, gameplay variations, redesigned maps, and additional story content. The game takes you to the fictional land of Erzoa where you can create and customize your avatars as you participate in the impending invasion of the Garden Empire. You can select your character from various pre-selected options such as gender, race, job type, and facial features. After which, you will now be taken into the game world where you can explore the landscapes, fight off monsters, interact with other players, and complete quests and missions. Unlike in the other series, you will now have the option to play third- or first-person view.

8. Grand Theft Auto IV

In this open-world action adventure video game, which is an offshoot to the Grand Theft Auto series, you will assume the character of Niko Bellic, a veteran from a war in Eastern Europe as he came to the United States in search of his own American Dream. Set in the fictional Liberty City, you will follow his adventures as he got entangled with gangs, corruption and crimes. GTA IV combined the elements of driving games, third-person shooters and an open world gameplay with features that allow for multiplayer modes. This game is more accessible than the other series as it provides the ability to pilot helicopters, steer boats, and climb obstacles aside from driving cars.

7. Battlefield 2

The sequel to the bestseller war Battlefield franchise, this online multiplayer game will take you to another realm as you fight battles in a modern-era battleground. Using modern realistic weapon systems and vehicles, this single-player first-person shooter game takes some strategy and RPG elements as you fight with the armies from China, the US Marines, and other fictional Middle East Coalition. The new game also features a dynamic stage limiting system that scales the size of the battle depending on the numbers of players, aside from physics and sounds and improved visuals. Meanwhile, the multiplayer feature allows you to organize with other players to form into squads under the leadership of one commander for teamwork. While you can play for any of the opposing factions as represented on the map, the main objective of the game is to reduce the opposing team tickets, which represent the army’s ability to reinforce their position. You can also add to your global player stats, which are used for awards and promotions, by playing on ranked servers.

6. Assassin’s Creed III

In this high-packed action game, you will assume the role of Desmond, a barman who finds himself imprisoned in the top secret lab of the Templars-run Abstergo Corporation. Desmond, a former member of the modern-day faction called Assassin Brotherhood and a descendant of one of its original member, must try to find the artifacts “Pieces of Eden” using his ‘genetic memories.’ These artifacts can allegedly give its possessor the power of mind control, which the Templars are trying to use to conquer the entire world. Your “health” within the game is dependent on Desmond’s accurate memories of his ancestors and when it is 100%, you can have the “eagle vision,” which highlights all characters as red and blue to help you determine whether they are friends or enemies. This groundbreaking series uses the elements of historical fantasy, science fiction, and stealth.

5. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

You can see most of the cars from the start, while some are hidden in different locations. It also features a blacklist of 10 instead of 15, aside from the performance upgrades available for all the cars including bodywork, nitrous, tires, and chassis.

4. Prince of Persia

A game that was spun from a Walt Disney movie, the Prince of Persia is an action-packed game that chronicled the adventures of the prince set in ancient Persia. Its new version picks up on the series wherein the unnamed Prince encountered the evil god of Darkness called Ahriman. You will assume the role of the prince as you traverse myriads of new environments using your acrobatic skills. The gameplay is similar with other spin-offs like the “Sands of Time,” as you combat enemies to cleanse the land from corruption.

3. Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

The continuation of the epic saga of three distinct races: Zerg, Terran and Protoss, this game chronicled their clashes as they fight once again in a fast-paced real-time strategy game in the sequel to the original Starcraft. It also promises the releases of new expansions called “Heart of the Swarm,” which focuses on the Zergs to be released on March 12, 2013; and the “Legacy of the Void,” which focuses on the Protoss race. The continuation of Starcraft: Brood of War shows the struggles of each faction with their legions of veterans with brand-new unit types, specifically the exploits of marshal-turned-rebel leader Jim Raynor. Throughout the 29-mission campaign, you can choose your own mission path and select the technology and upgrades tailored to your needs. The improved version also offers new features such as character profiles with their achievements, voice communication, stat-tracking, and more.

2. World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria

Building on the foundation from the first three installments in the WoW series, the fourth installment offers plenty of high-level content from levels 85to 90, which makes it the most popular MMO among experienced players. Though the core experience remains the same, it offers continual pursuits wherein you will find that obtaining better items can result in more challenging quests. Though this motion game offers the same formula, which makes playing the whole WoW series rewarding; the Mist of Pandaria is its finest form yet with its fast-paced, quick in-game cut-scenes, voiced dialogue, and story-heavy experience that will never take you out of the action for long.

1. Prototype

In this game, you are Alex Mercer who wakes up in a morgue with no memory but also possesses extraordinary powers. A mysterious virus has break out in New York City, which turns everyone into savage mutants. The military has been called in to quarantine the city. Since you can shape shift and absorb other beings, you are now the most powerful life form in the entire city. This single-player game has 31 missions from simple clashes, escort missions, and colossal boss battles. This is like any open-world games where you will be required to do repetitive tasks. You will also have some side missions where you can earn some Evolve Points (EP) to upgrade your abilities and powers. This game also employs the ‘deceive or destroy’ gameplay where you can choose to blend in with the population and progress through the story, or become a killing machine as you move through New York City and leave destruction at your wake.

Storytelling is a bed time experience that everyone practiced since time immemorial. It never ceases to tickle and amaze children’s imagination as they listen to their favorite fairy tale. With the passage of time, these fairy tales can now be viewed in the wide screen, whether it is animation or live or a combination of both, to allow the children to see their imagination come alive reinforcing the belief that indeed, ‘legends never die.’ In line with the “Tell a Fairy Tale Day” being celebrated today, February 26, here is a list of the top 10 fairy tale movies of all time that everyone loves, which started “Once upon a time.”

10. Harry Potter Series

Though these were not exactly bedtime stories as it were based on the novel by JK Rowling, the series has brought back the dying market of children’s fiction. Though the story does not have fairies, the magical story of Harry Potter takes you around his quests to conquer Lord Voldemort, who threatened not only the magical world but the non-magical world as well. The highest-grossing film series of all time also catapulted the commercial success of the books and other related merchandise. Though its theme of death, corruption and prejudice may be different from other fairy tale movies, in the end they all share the moral truth of all the folklores and legends that the good always triumph in the end.

9. The Chronicles of Narnia

The movie adaptation of the same title by the CS Lewis follows the adventures of four Pevensie siblings as they ventured into a magical world with mythical characters in a battle that is the parallel world of their own. Though some critics would say that it is better to read the seven novels to allow your imagination to explore, the three movies including “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” “Prince Caspian” and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” which were released in 2005, 2008, and 2010 respectively, were all commercial success with “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” as the 22nd highest-grossing film series of all time. They also gained critical success for the daring of bringing the journey that spanned in generations to life, which feel both comfortingly familiar and exciting while communicating some moral truths.

8. Tangled (Rapunzel)

The film, which was originally titled as “Rapunzel,” took six years to finish and was considered as the most expensive animated film ever with an estimated budget of $260 million. The 2nd most expensive film of all time employed both computer-generated imagery (CGI) and the traditional animation with non-photorealistic rendering creating the impression of a painting. Slightly veering away from the German folklore published by the Brothers Grimm, it chronicled the adventures of Rapunzel and Flynn as they tricked Gothel into a three-day round trip travel in search of a special paint and in following their dreams.

7. Sleeping Beauty

Also known as the “Little Briar Rose” from the classics by the Brothers Grimm, this is the last animated film produced by Walt Disney that was released in theatres in 1959 until Disney’s death, following the release of “The Little Mermaid” in 1989. Before the animation production began, the film was shot in a live-action reference version using live actors posing as characters and models for the animators. Sleeping Beauty tells the story of the young princess Aurora who was cursed by an evil fairy godmother to fall asleep along with the inhabitants of the castle on her 16th birthday, only to be awakened with the first love’s kiss.

6. Aladdin (and the Magic Lamp)

Who could ever forget Princess Jasmin and Aladdin singing “A Whole New World” while having a magic carpet ride with Abu, Aladdin’s kleptomaniac monkey? A part of the Disney Classics series called Disney Renaissance; it was based on the Arabian folklore “One Thousand and One Nights.” Since the moral message of the original tale was inappropriate, the filmmakers ‘put a spin on it’ by showing that though the fulfillment of wishes can be a good thing, it can also caused problems. It also tackled the theme of duplicity, where Jasmin and Aladdin pretended to be the persons they were not; and being ‘imprisoned’ with Jasmin and Aladdin trapped to their lifestyles, the Genie to its lamp, etc. The film became the highest grossing film of 1992 and has won numerous awards mostly for its soundtrack.

5. Little Mermaid

Though the animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney in 1989 has been loosely based on the original fairy tale done by Hans Christian Andersen, it veered away from its tragic ending as ‘Ariel,’ the mermaid princess got her prince and did not turn into a sea foam in the end. The last Disney film to use the traditional hand-painted cel method of animation, it boasts of good character designs and beautiful musical scoring, where some songs even become hugely popular. The film was credited for breathing a life back into the dying Disney animated feature films, which ceased production after some commercial failures in the 1960s. It also marked the Disney Renaissance following the success of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in 1988.

4. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

This film has many prequels and sequels and was the first animated film produced by Walt Disney. The story of the queen who was so obsessed with beauty, a distress princess, and her dwarf friends has been told in different characters’ point of view, which tells that evil will never triumph. This famous fairy tale is a must-read if not a must-watch for every child before they grow old and as a good lesson to not to accept gift or candies from strangers.

3. Peter Pan

For those who never want to grow up, this fairy tale is for you. Feature in both animation and live action films, Peter Pan reminds grow up to never let go of childish adventures despite the miseries in life. It also brings back happy childhood memories where your backyard is the forest where you fought off your pirate friends, come home for dinner, and fight again another day with your made-up swords in your made-up costumes. Though the first animated “Peter Plan” film was produced by the Walt Disney in 1953, it was the 2003 movie released by Universal Pictures, which gained commercial success as the first live-action sound film based on the play.

2. Beauty and the Beast

This tale has garnered a number of adaptations not only in screen but in other media as well like television, prose and the stage. However, the most notable adaptation so far was the animated film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1991, which became a commercial success, as it comes with beautiful musical scoring. The only animated film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, it tells that ‘beauty is not just skin deep’ and love can melt even a tyrannical beast’s heart with the help of singing teapots and other palace furniture. The movie also gained critical recognition for having the best writers, filmmakers, and musicians gathered together to produce a great family entertainment for the whole family in healthier Hollywood tradition.

1. Cinderella

Cinderella is the top fairy tale that has many spin-offs with thousands of variants known throughout the world in many languages. It is an epitome of real-life ‘rags-to-riches’ stories and that the good always triumph in the end. For women, it is for them to never lose hope that their prince will someday come even without the help of their fairy godmother. It also tells that perseverance, kindness, patience and other important virtues are more important than wealth. The twelfth animated movie from the Walt Disney Classic series released on February 15, 1950, it became hugely popular with its soundtrack including “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” and more.
