What does a meaningful self-sacrifice means? Does it mean giving up all your possessions, including your life, for the welfare of others? Over the course of world history, there were unsung heroes who gave their all for others. However, what made these 10 amazing self-sacrifices in the world inspiring were the resounding effects of their sacrifice that can still affect the people of today, years when these heroes were all gone. Everyday, people make their own little self-sacrifices. A mother can sacrifice her life for her unborn child even if it entails a lot of pain that will eventually lead to her death. Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of a great self-sacrifice where He died for the remissions of sins, which still resonates with all the Christians worldwide. Though this may be hard to replicate, here is the list of amazing self-sacrifices in the world that still inspires people that there is still good in everyone.

Have you remembered the recent meteor fall that occurred in Russia? For many years, that kind of sighting happens quite seldom these days, since most of the time, the nearest of celestial body encounters are appreciated and observed only through powerful telescopes. But a meteor seen by the naked eye that has been also captured by cameras? It’s the closest thing a falling object from space could get into Earth for over a century already. However, tracing back in time, there are also meteor impacts that have changed many things within the planet, proving to be far bigger than what has been experienced just recently. Here are the top 10 largest meteor craters all over the world, telling you that small things hurling from space can create huge holes on the ground.

10. Tookoonooka Crater

The Tookoonooka crater can no longer be seen these days because the crevice created by the impact has been concealed in the ground during the Cretaceous period, particularly at a time when the Cadna-owie Formation was under way. This was over 123 to 133 million years ago, but the crater had been discovered due to data collected during a petroleum expedition back in 1989. The discovery of shocked quartz being found on the drill’s core. The crater is over 66km in diameter, and is now situated in South West Queensland in Australia.

9. Morokweng Crater

Located close to the borders of Botswana in South Africa, the Morokweng crater, despite that it can no longer be found physically as it is buried underneath the Kalahari Desert, is quite huge being 70km in diameter. It is named as such, as it is found nearest to the town of Morokweng. It was recently found in 1994 and is noted to be over 145 million years of age, specifically timed during the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition period. However, thanks to magnetic and gravimetric surveys conducted near the area of impact, along with the discovery of original asteroid being 770m deep, the existence of the said crater was verified, where its fragments have also been preserved and displayed inside the London Science Museum.

8. Puchezh-Katunki Crater

Even by just basing the location of the Puchezh-Katunki crater by name, it can be easily identified that the 80km crater is found in Russia. Specifically discovered in the Volga Federal District, the Puchezh-Katunki crater is known to make impact in the Earth’s surface during the Phanerozoic period. Due to the period of collision made, it is the only of its kind that was never responsible for putting any form of specie in extinction. In fact, when it is seen today, it can be quite difficult to trace but can be detected as vegetation planted within its craters are different, compared to those outside the crater.

7. Chesapeake Bay Crater

The Chesapeake Bay crater is actually quite famous for its location of impact, not only because it is the biggest impact crater found in the US being 85km in diameter, but more importantly, it is one of the most reserved as it can be found underwater. Its effect in the Chesapeake Bay is actually apparent, as the impact also shaped the presence of land being found nearby. Due to its location, the said crater is also one of the best studied as specifics such as depth, total diameter, even impact diameter, along with peak rings, and impact depth have all been researched in detail. Scientists were able to compare the crater being two times larger than Rhode Island and almost as deep as the Grand Canyon. Even the geophysical changes during the impact about 35 million years were analyzed in accuracy, saying that the found statistics in the meteor’s impact may have caused a tsunami that affected modern day geological features.

6. Manicouagan Crater

If there is one crater that is noted to be the most visible today, it would be none other than the impact crater found in the regions of Quebec, Canada. Located in the Manicouagan Regional County Municipality, the visible crater, surprisingly, is one of the oldest impacts that ever occurred in prehistoric times, even over 215 million years of age. The meteor that fell is described to be over 5km in diameter, which is why it has been concluded by most researchers that the Manicouagan crater could also be responsible for the extinction of certain creatures by the end of the Carnian period. The impact is over 100km in diameter.

5. Popigai Crater

Although both the Manicouagan and Popigai craters are 100km in diameter, the time of impact should be one factor that makes the difference, especially with the fact that crater size may have became smaller due to sedimentation and time-variable physical changes that may affect the crater in general. The Manicougan is about 215 million years, while the latter is only 35 million. Despite that the meteor fell on land, the Popigai crater found in Siberia can still be seen in satellite, as the discoloration of the ground is still apparent. This was one of the reasons why UNESCO has named the impact site as a Geopark. In the same spot also lies a diamond mine that’s being operated and protected by Stalin, which actually fascinated scientists as the abundance of diamond is due to the transformation of graphite due to the pressure created by the impact of the probable chondrite asteroid.

4. Woodleigh Crater

Discovered by four scientists working at the Geological Survey of Western Australia and the Australian National University in 15 April 2000, the Woodleigh crater, located in Western Australia, is one of the most recent crater impact finds, as announced by Arthur J. Mory, the group’s leader. While there may be question whether the 120km diameter size of the crater is true, as the asteroid that caused such damage to the Earth’s surface could be about 6km in diameter, the power of impact leads to other conclusive claims where the atmospheric pressure made by the impact is over 100,000 times greater.

3. Chicxulub Crater

There is also one impact that occurred in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, particularly set in the town near Chicxulub over 66 million years ago in the Cretaceous Period. The 180km crater is said to be caused by an asteroid that is over 10km in diameter, which is actually pretty huge, even unto this day. And with such a big meteor falling to

It is considered the tallest waterfall in Europe, which can be seen in More Og Romosdal Province in Norway. It’s considered a horsetail type due to the concentration of the water that gradually expands as it reaches the bottom. Although it has no name at all, but because of the common conversations of people in the place, wherein it’s being referred to as Ølmäa, it was famed with the term anyway. The water source of it comes from the Romsdalen plateaus, wherein it drops at 720m high in a slow pace movements.

Yosemite is famous for waterfalls, especially in the months of May to June, where tourists and other visitors enjoy the big drops of waterfalls, particularly the Yosemite falls. You’ll enjoy the peak of it from November to July, especially in May. It’s actually comprised of upper, middle, and lower Yosemite. You’ll delight seeing its falls even if you are on the Yosemite Valley, even as you view it in the village and lodge. You may also hike to the falls if you plan to do a strenuous activity following the trail, which includes other waterfalls that surround the area. It is located in Yosemite National Park of the Sierra Nevada in California in the North America. Its longest drop is 1,430 feet, while 3 recorded number of drops.

7. Mutarazi Falls (2,499 feet)

It is also known as Mtarazi falls, which is found in the highlands of the Honda Valley of Zimbabwe. It’s the second highest waterfall in Africa while ranked number 7th in the whole world although there are other claims that it’s the 17th highest waterfalls in the world. You’ll appreciate every water drop of it, which is at its heaviest downpour from February to April. There are other nearby places where you can stay like the Mutarazi Falls Camping Huts, where you’ll enjoy the perks of their camping set-up. It consists of a single tier especially the two-tiered granite waterfalls that boost the water spray displays of waterfalls.

It is a secret paradise in the midst of the province of Amazon in Peru when Stefan Ziemendorff discovered this place. Its height is just estimation, and the 2,532 feet height was not an exact measurement. There was a hearsay that it’s hidden in order to avoid sudden curse from the legendary tale of a mermaid who has the power to utter curses. This waterfall is actually divided into two segments, which comprises of the top, being 250 meters, and the lower part, being 540 meters. There are developments being made in order to increase tourism, which would include restaurants, industry workers, trail, small hotel, and other relaxing amenities. As you reached the base of the waterfall, you’ll find tranquility in their pool. Overall, you’ll have to spend 6 hours hiking in order to reach the place which is located northeast of Lima.

5. Monge Waterfalls (2,536 feet)

Also known as the Mongefossen to the locals of Norway, Monge Falls stands at a height of 2,536 feet, or 443 meters. It is classified as a horsetail kind of falls as the water, falls from the top on a narrow path and then expands as it down to the bottom. Due to its height, the said tall waterfall is also used for generating electricity, which explains why the flow path from Mongefossen is usually dry during summer. Nevertheless, if the said water system has been freed to flow on its own, it could have been an interesting tourist attraction whether it may invite waterfall watchers or maybe sport fishers.

4. Waihilau Falls (2,600 feet)

Despite that the Waihilau Falls in Hawaii is a wonderful sight to see, as the trailing water perfectly flows through a steep cliff that’s covered in lush and green vegetation, it may be a bit of a challenge for tourists to see as the path is not that accessible. Ironically, this is also the reason why the said water system is serene and virgin in the most literal sense, not being too exposed to the foreign eye. Aside from being pristine and pure, Waihilau Falls, which has a height of over 2,600 feet, is one of the many places created in the lava flow of historic volcanoes, particularly the Kohala Volcano, which is actually extinct today. Once you make it over the treacherous path, you will also see other three waterfalls as consolation to your hard work and patience: Wai’ilikahi Falls, Kakaauki Falls, and Lahomene Falls.

3. Utigord Waterfalls (2,625 feet)

You might not be able to find this falls very well in Norway not unless you’d be able to know its native name, which is Ramnefjellfossen. Its height of 2,625 feet had been in question for so many years because of its 4 distinct leaps, which however does not store flowing water at lower depth, making it still almost free flowing, thus being interconnected with each other. Some have even measured its height to only 1,968 feet, but Guinness Book of World Records have tallied the length of the waterfall based on how it was cited earlier, through connectivity. Although it is also known as Utigørdsfossen by many as its name was mentioned even many years ago, Ramnefjellfossen is still the waterfall’s official name as it was more popular over 30 to 40 years ago.

2. Tugela Waterfalls (3,110 feet)

Known as the second tallest waterfall in the world, Tugela Falls, or also known as Thukela Falls based on the phonetic spelling of the word meaning “sudden” or “startling”, is over 3,110 feet in height. It is divided into five drops that vary in height, depending on the water source that flows through it. The name is also perfect as the water in Tugela does not flow steadily all year long, especially during the summer season, when the falls is commonly dry. This is all due to the flat surface located on Mont Aux where flow from different directions still prove scarce for the very high waterfall. However, when the rainy season comes in and everything goes through Tugela, the sight is very pleasing to behold as you could see the full 3,110 feet being filled with water all throughout.

1. Angel Waterfalls (3,287 feet)

If you are using Angel Waterfalls as your reference point for the highest in the world, then you should direct your sights in Venezuela as it is the only one in the planet that spans to as high as 3,287 feet. When using the Pemon Indian tongue, Angel Falls is more known as Kerepakupai Merú and Parekupa Vena. This tall waterfall can be found in the Canaima National Park, making it very accessible to tourists and locals who would like to see the falls that got the title of being the tallest in the world. Due to its height, especially from the last catch point going down to the baseline, all that can be felt are little drops or mists of water. The falls was actually named after James Angel, whose plane actually crashed on the topmost section of the mountains while surveying the area.

While the leap year comes only every four years due to the fact that it takes the earth 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 48 seconds to travel around the sun; it is interesting to know that the people who are born on February 29 are called as “leaplings.” However, being a leapling can have some problems as well especially in obtaining driver’s license, though they cannot deny the fact that they can also cash on their unusual birthday with freebies and perks from scores of stores and restaurants. Though the Romans were the first to designate February 29 as a leap day, it was Gregory XIII who fined-tuned in the 16th century the calculations being used today. Here are the top 10 unknown facts about leap year that every leaplings, or not, should know.

10. Leap Year folklore and traditions.

Aside from tradition in Ireland, it is considered to be unlucky for someone to be born on a leap day in Scotland just as everybody else is afraid of Friday the 13th. Meanwhile in Greece, it is unlucky for couples to get married on a leap year, especially on February 29; which incidentally is St. Oswald’s Day in honor of the archbishop of York who died on February 29, 992. This is, however, commemorated on February 28 during the common years. For the superstitious Chinese, they believe that more bad luck happens during the leap month in the lunar calendar. They also believed that children born on this day are hard-headed and that they are never good in business or in getting married.

9. Leap year in Guinness.

Ever since leap year was first introduced with the transition from the Roman calendar to the Julian Calendar 2000 years ago, it has also been subjected to the “world record of leap-day babies” as recorded by the Guinness Book of Records. Leaplings are not only invited to join the “Honor Society of Leap Day Babies,” but there are world record holders for those families producing three succeeding generations born on February 29 – the Keogh family, and of the number of children born on February 29 from the same family as well. The lists of these families include Peter Anthony who was in 1940 in Ireland; his son Peter Eric, who was born in the UK in 1964; and his daughter Bethany, born in 1996. The Henriksen from Andenes, Norway holds the official record for the most number of children born of February 29, as Mrs. Karin Henriksen gave birth to her daughter Heidi in 1960, and her sons Olav and Leif Martin in 1964 and 1968 in that order.

8. There was an actual February 30.

Though it was just temporary, February 30 was an actual date used at one point in Sweden and the Soviet Union. In Sweden, February 30, 1712 resulted from an error in their calendar conversion during the 18th century; while it was an attempt to cut the seven-day weeks into five-day weeks in the case of the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1931. There was also the claim of the 13th century scholar Johannes de Sacrobosco that February had 30 days in the Julian calendar in the leap years between 45 BCE and 8 BCE. This was to give the month of August to have the same length as July. However, historic evidences have refuted this claim as Sacrobosco was also known to be a critic of the Julian calendar.

7. February 29 in history.

Leap year came to be due to the ancient Egyptians, who first figured out that the solar year and the calendar they were using did not match up. Because of that people came to know the tradition where women proposed to men, which started in 1288. February 29, 1704, meanwhile, saw the raid conducted by French Canadians and Indians in Deerfield, Massachusetts as the Indians were trying to retrieve their church bell that has been shipped from France. The predecessor of calculator, the first tabulating machine, was invented in 1860. In 1904, a seven-man commission was created to hasten the works of the Panama Canal; while Miklos Horthy de Nagybanya became the Regent of Hungary in 1920. 1944 saw the invasion of the Admiralty Islands by General Douglas McArthur, which was also the day the Dorothy McElroy Vredenburgh of Alabama became the first woman to be appointed secretary of the national political party, Democratic National Committee. Nowadays, February 29 is celebrated as the “Rare Disease Day” to obtain funding for diseases that have no known cure. US presidential elections and the Summer Olympics were also held every four years.

6. Leap Year and Astrology

Astrologers believe that leaplings possess unusual talents and abilities due to their extraordinary birthday. While they can choose to celebrate on February 28 or March 1 on common years, these Pisces-born leaplings are considered as optimistic, friendly and good-natured. Though highly opinionated, they are suited for parenthood; live a healthy lifestyle, proud of their versatility, and insist on personal happiness. It is interesting to note though, that those who were born in 1884 never get to celebrate their entire teenage years until they turned 20.

5. Some mathematical facts about leap year.

There is only one chance for every 1,461 leap year births or 0.0006 percent chance, which makes up the 4 million people today who were born on February 29. A year divisible by 100 cannot be a leap year unless it can be divided by 400, which make the year 2000 a leap year but the year 1900 was not. There is also the “leap second” or a one-second adjustment that is sometimes applied to the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to keep the day closer to the mean solar time. The latest adjustment on “leap second” was made on June 30, 2012 at 23:59:60 UTC.

4. There is a leap year capital of the world.

Anthony, Texas, a town situated near the border of New Mexico, is the self-proclaimed “leap year capital of the world.” It started in 1988 when dames Mary Ann Brown and Birdie Lewis, who were both born in a leap year, came up with an idea to have a leap year festival not only to give the town some recognition but to raise funds for the community as well. The Chamber of Commerce agreed with this; and today, February 29 is celebrated with parades, festivals, birthday dinners, parties, and hot air balloon rides where leaplings celebrate their birthdays in style. Being born on a leap year can really have its perks!

3. Local laws can decide when ‘leaplings’ celebrate their birthdays.

The Civil Code of China declared that leaplings or those who are born on February 29 take February 28 as their legal birthday; a law that has been carried out since October 29, 1929. Hong Kong has a similar law implemented since the 1990, where the legal birthday of a leapling is March 1 in common years. However, only a few of them will get to celebrate their Golden Birthday since they would be 116 years old before they turned 29.

2. It is normal for women to propose to men on leap year day.

This tradition goes back in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about the fact that the women have to wait for men to propose to them, which she thought was unfair. St. Patrick gave in by setting February 29 as the day that allows women to have the right to ask for a man’s hand in marriage. The tradition lived on in Scotland until 1288 when Queen Margaret declared that those who will refuse will be fined with a silk dress, a kiss, or a pair of gloves if they rejected the ladies. This tradition was also practiced in Denmark and Finland, while it is considered as bad luck to get married in a leap year in Germany. In modern day America, this is practiced during the “Sadie Hawkins Day” in honor of the homeliest girls where they can pursue the most eligible bachelors in town. This stemmed from the comic strip Li’l Abner created by Al Capp.

1. The origin of the term Leap Year.

In the Gregorian calendar, a fixed date normally advances one day of the week year after year. However, during the leap year, the days of the week will advance in two days from March onwards due to the extra day inserted at the end of February, making one day “leap over” in the week. For instance, if your birthday in 2004 fell on a Saturday, in 2005 it was Sunday, Monday in 2006, and became Tuesday in 2007. However in 2008, which was a leap year, your birthday fell on a Thursday, which made it “leap over” Wednesday; thus the name.

Even though the winter season is about to end in the next couple of weeks, the snowstorms are still as bad and as mean as it can be. In fact, last February 20, the states of Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arizona, and even California have received snowstorm warnings that have caused worry and concern to many of its residents, where some have been caught in the middle of the blizzard, being stranded on the streets. While this event may disturb many of the people thinking that this may be one of the worst storms they have experienced, you might be shocked when you come to know of the top 10 worst snowstorms in history. Knowing this may even make you feel thankful that such catastrophes in the past are never experienced today.

10. February 1717, New England

What occurred in February 1717 was so terrible that the blizzard encountered that time was called the “Great Snow” because of the huge amounts of snow that have been dropped down into the states of Pennsylvania and even Massachusetts. The said locations were hit hardest with 9 feet of snow and drifts that are as high as 25 feet, burying most of the single-storey houses. Although it may not be as high as what took place in 1888, the burden was quite hard because there were only horses as a mode of transportation, or even by foot.

9. October 2008, Tibet

When talking about Tibet, one of the first things that come to mind is the highest mountain in the world, which is Mount Everest. So just imagine how it’s like in this part of the world during wintertime. However, despite of experiencing so much snow, it’s a rare occurrence that many of the villages within the county of Lhunze would encounter 36 hours of non-stop snow, which accumulated over 1.5 meters from the ground up. Although there were only seven deaths, the storm was so dense that it destroyed buildings and roads have been closed for days.

8. March 1971, Canada

Canadians may be used to encountering snowstorms of different strengths and depths, but back in March 1971, there came a blizzard that dumped so much snow in the regions of Quebec and Ontario. Even though the storm dumped 45.7 centimeters of snow with 61 centimeters in some regions, which is ordinary in most cases, the heavy blowing, including the zero visibility and sharp drop of temperature took over 20 people. But what’s even worse for the Canadians during this time is that a hockey game has been cancelled, which is a very rare situation in all of Canadian history.

7. January 1977, New York

This particular snowstorm definitely was one of the most torturing and the most challenging as it did not only happen one time, or on a few occasions, just like what other blizzards have been in other years. Everything began in November 1976 with storms that consistently amass more than 30 inches of snow, which got worse on the months of December and January. The winds are just as fierce as compared with the rest, being 69 to about 75mph, but what made the 29 deaths disturbing is the fact that for over 3 months, residents and drivers encountered piercing chills that went to as low as 26, even over 50 to 60 degrees below zero.

6. January 1967, Midwestern United States

The northeasterners may have been used to the many blizzards and snowstorms that have raged havoc within the states located therein, the story is different when speaking about the midwesterners. Particularly in the cities of Chicago in Illinois, Gary in Indiana, and Kalamazoo in Michigan, there have been over 76 people dead due to the heavy blizzards and snowstorms that have affected lives and homes. All of these happened even though the temperatures are at a record high during winter, where even tornado breakouts were reported before the storm happened.

5. January 2008, China

Timing was one of the worst elements that made a China blizzard turn out fatal and very destructive. Because everyone was so busy at going home to relatives, friends, and family members, 178 million of the travelers have been surprised with what occurred while they were on various modes of transportation. The wind was so harsh that it destroyed 223,000 homes and about 862,000 other properties have suffered damage. Over 129 lives have been claimed at what many thought would be the happiest welcome of the Chinese New Year.

4. February 1978, New England

Over 1 to 3 feet of snow had been blown down to the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and even in New York while the blizzard blew over at speeds of 161kph, which caused poor visibility and drifting issues. Although the amount of snow was not that heavy, what made this one of the worst in history is that it occurred during high tide, and it happened in the afternoon; at a time where kids are in school and employees are in their work places. Since many are on their way home, many have been stranded on the road, causing over deaths of 100 people.

3. November 1913, Ohio

The blizzard that took place in the lakes of Cleveland was known in history as “The Great Lakes Storm”. There have been 250 lives that were taken as forecasters did not have a clue that a 16-hour snowstorm would be ravaging the town, which destroyed over 19 ships due to its winds that reached 90mph. The said number of deaths has been covered by low visibility, sharp temperature decline, and whiteouts that easily killed people who did not have much clue of what they expected.

2. March 1888, Northeastern United States

The northeastern section of the US, which included the state of New York and Connecticut where caught with heavy rains, which later turned into very dense snow from Sunday night to Monday morning. The snowstorm was so heavy that it caused as much as 1.5 meters of snow in certain places and even snow drifts that is as high as 15 to 18 meters. What’s worse is that it took away the lives of over 400 people, aside from the 100 others that have been lost at sea.

1. February 1972, Iran

Iran is known by most people as a very hot and dry place, as there are many deserts and rocky territories that can be found within the country. But could you imagine how snow can easily take the toll of over 4,000 people, knowing that they are not used to the snowstorm hitting villages and towns? Whole towns and communities have been wiped out of survivors with over 8 meters of snow drowning everyone who came in contact with the blizzard.

Aside from New Year’s Day and Christmas Season, Valentine’s Day is the next best occasion that everyone looks forward to each year. The only difference is that it has not been considered or declared as a non-working holiday, like some of the festivities and occasions that we have on the calendar. Who would have thought that the historical background of it was derived from the undying belief of Saint Valentine during the early part of Christianism, wherein he performed secretly marriages among soldiers, and for actively reaffirming beliefs as Christian followers? It resulted to his martyrdom, and according to some who have witnessed his agony prior to his last execution, he sent a letter to his daughter that ends with his signature of “from your Valentine”. It was later called as Saint Valentine’s Day or Feast of Valentine’s Day. It becomes center into a Romantic gesture in showing special affection and devotion to others by 15th century, where couples send gifts and other presents like flowers and greeting cards that became the symbol of love. It has flourished being well respected by 19th century, wherein mass production of greeting cards have been printed out and sold. Let us check other ways that other countries do in celebrating this day by knowing these top 10 Valentine’s Day traditions on earth.

10. Mass Weddings

Just like other celebrations in western countries, Filipinos in the Philippines have flowers, chocolates, and greeting cards being sent to their loved ones. However, one of the weirdest ways that you could hear being done during this day is their mass weddings performed in public or other specific places in certain provinces and cities in the Philippines. In fact, prior to this big day, couples who are living together, but are not bounded by legal matrimony through a wedding ceremony, are given opportunity to partake of the privileges freely without cost.

This is lead yearly by the Women of Zimbabwe Arise, and they dress themselves in red and white while disseminating messages written in cards and paper roses. It encourages awareness to let everyone know that they have the right and opportunity to get education, receive health care, and to stop oppression from the government.

If there is a traditional Christmas carol during Christmas season, British children during the 18th and 19th centuries were singing Valentine’s songs from door to door in the community, and of course, they ask for gifts, pennies, treats, and fruits, which is similar to the Christmas tradition. The lyrics of these songs have been preserved, and indeed kids symbolize the kind of love for them that they can give and offer to everyone even it’s not Valentine’s day or even Christmas.

6. Gift-Giving

In Korea, people start celebrating Valentines at the start of February until April, but it is more of a gift giving because there are certain days where men and women are allowed to give gifts from chocolates to flowers. February 14 to March 13 will be for women, and when March 14 begins, it sends signals to men that it is their turn. For single women, they celebrate it on 14 April by munching black bean paste noodles as a symbolism of mourning for their solitary position.

5. Sweet Dreams Indeed

English women in the 17th century believed and practiced that putting five pieces of bay leaves to their pillows the night before Valentine’s Day would help them see their future husband through dreams. Some are doing some variations over time, wherein they are sprinkling bay leaves along with rosewater and place them together across the pillows that they have. Other things that they do are to sleep on the right position and recite softly the words based on their folklore account in order to try its efficacy.

4. Gloves and Love

When you hear the word gloves, you will automatically associate it in world-class sports for men where Manny Pacquiao has been known for, which is boxing. However, in the latter part of the 16th century under the Elizabeth era, gloves are symbolisms of Valentine’s gift to women. It’s done when women approach the men that they like and recite this line while handling a pair of gloves: “Good-morrow Valentine, I go today; To wear for you, what you must pay; A pair of gloves next Easter Day”. Of course, it is expected that men should send back a pair of gloves to women, and if they are fortunate to see women wearing the gloves that they sent, it means that the feelings is mutual. Men, on the other hand do not need to wait for invitation, they could also send an invitation by sending a pair of gloves, and the response could be determined if it is worn or not on next Easter day.

3. Drawing for Love

It is true that one of the romantic places that you can visit and spend your Valentine’s Day with your special someone is in Paris, where you could see and visit the legendary Eiffel Tower. Nonetheless, aside from the greeting cards that they have started, another tradition that they are doing for a long time is the drawing for love, wherein houses that are faced one another would be filled that day. Each would take turns in calling out to one another in order to have a successful pairing off, but if this would not work out, the man could leave to find another woman. To those women who are still unmatched at the end of the day, they would gather during the bonfire at night, which is highlighted by the burning of pictures.

2. A Ballot Box

If we have modern online dating, set-up date, and others during Valentine’s day, in ancient Rome, they did it differently, which was another sign of the highest form of conservatism, wherein both men and women would write their names in the paper and place them all in the box. Whoever men drew from the box, they would start paying attention to the picked woman. Although there were suggestions of changing their real names into saint’s names, but it did not push through. In fact, it’s one of the most exciting time in the year, where men find real partners and love because of this unique and conservative dating game.

1. Exchanges of Pressed White Flowers

Among all the countries that have been mentioned on this list, Denmark is the only one that joined the yearly celebration of Valentine’s Day at the latter part of the 19th century. Of course, exchanges of flowers is still evident and one of the sweetest activities to reciprocate love towards your significant others, but to the people in Denmark, they do it by exchanging pressed white flowers not just among lovers, but even with friends.

Undoubtedly, your first date with a romantic prospect is very crucial. Your first date could lead to a second one or you may get the impression that you’re definitely better off as friends. Your first date could blossom into a full-blown romantic relationship or it may end up as an experience you’ll shrug off. During your first date, almost everything matters – from how you dress to what you say. Some may smoothly breeze through their first date experience but for others, it’s a night they can’t wait to end. Nevertheless, here are the top ten most common topics people talk about during their first date.

10. Siblings.

Talking about each other’s families would be too advanced for a first date but talking about siblings would be a safe starting ground. You can casually ask your date if he or she got any brothers or sisters and talk about their basic details such as occupation, age or school. Just don’t get too personal by asking if the brother or sister is cute, smart or single. It will surely spell the end of your date. If you know your date’s brother or sister, siblings would be the most comfortable topic for you to start off your conversation.

9. Place of Residence.

This is particularly true when your date is not from your immediate geographical community. Aside from being a neutral topic, your town or your local community could be an exciting subject. You could talk about how each of you came to live where you do now. You may also exchange stories of interesting things that happened to you in your locality. These fun and spontaneous stories could help in loosening up the tension or the silence during your first date. Whether you decide to have a second date or not, this conversation would be a great learning experience for you.

8. Food.

Food is one topic that concerns and interests both men and women. Just make sure you do not touch on the amount or volume of food the other person has ordered. It will make your date feel uncomfortable or offended. It is advisable to start off with what you or your date has ordered and why you or your date has chosen it. This will already trigger deeper and more personal sharing. If you have already started eating, you could also commend the taste of the food. Be careful on saying negative about the food especially if your date was the one who chose the venue.

7. Likes and dislikes.

As your date conversation progresses, you, and your partner will most likely begin to feel more comfortable about more personal information. As you share about what you like and what you don’t like, you will also find it fun to listen to your date sharing about his or her dislikes. The sharing will also give you a clearer picture of whether you can get along well or not. You could also inject stories or experiences related to your likes and dislikes so your conversation can be more fun and exciting. Upon knowing your date’s likes and dislikes, your second and succeeding dates could already be just as smooth as a walk in the park.

6. Past-times

You can talk about your hobbies, your pets, your passion, and your interests. What kind of music do you like? Does your date dance or sing? What sports does each of you engage in? You may even discover common interests and hobbies. This could be your gauge as to how strong the initial bond that exists between you and your date is. It would surely be difficult to be dating someone who does not share even just one of your hobbies and interests. If you decide to have another date, these details will also lead you to the places you could go to and to the activities you could do together while you are getting to know each other more and more.

5. Immediate Environment.

A bit similar to talking about the food you have been served with, the ambiance of the restaurant you are dining in is also another conversation starter. You could also make side comments on the quality of service you have been provided with. Again, be careful in making negative comments if the place is your date’s choice. Nevertheless, if the venue is merely a random pick, subtle comments would not hurt. This feedback would make you understand the way your date thinks. If his or her point of view is relatively aligned with yours, the chances are promising. However, if your date has a mindset that is completely in contrast with yours, you should think twice before going out again. Once you feel comfortable with your date, you may even take turns making fake bios or stories about the waiter.

4. Travel Experiences.

Have you traveled to somewhere special or unique? How about your date? Aside from asking about your date’s past travel destination, it will also flatter your date if you ask about the places he or she plans to visit anytime soon. Travel experiences tell a lot about a person’s openness to new experiences and adventures. What you find out from your date’s stories may turn you on or turn you off. Just don’t be too eager to tell your date that you want to come with him or her in the next travel. That should be reserved for the 3rd or even 5th date.

3. Career.

Once the silence, awkwardness or tension starts to lighten between you and your date, you could already share about more serious matters such as your career. Details such as your position of title, the company where you are working and the number of years you have been there are basic. If you want your first date conversations to be more exciting, interesting, and fruitful, you could share about your experiences at work. Try to ask your date why or how he ended up working at where he is now. During the course of the conversation, your date may end up unraveling a bit of his or her career plans.

2. Your Date’s Look.

Appreciate your date for the way he or she looks. A sincere yet simple remark such as “Your new haircut looks good on you” will definitely work wonders. During your first date, it is offensive to make negative comments on your date’s outfit, makeup, shoes. Try to zero in on things that make your date look good. He may have a nice tie. She may have beautiful shoes. It is expected that your date has taken the effort to look good for your first date. Again, just exercise caution. Saying “I like your old haircut better” may spell the end of your date. Subtle and sincere comments would be the best approach.

1. Your First Encounter.

It would undeniably be romantic, fun, and exciting to revisit how the two of you have met in the first place. It may be because of common friends. Someone may have set the two of you up for a date. You may already know each other for quite some time. This will give you hindsight of how your date looks at all the events that led to the crossing of your paths. You may even be surprised at how your date’s perspective. Striking into this topic may trigger romantic feelings so never bring up this discussion if you have the intention to make your first date as your last.
