I know it might seem like a lot of fun to go out there by yourself and not think twice about things but being safe is and planning ahead of time is always the best thing to do. If you’re a parent, babysitter or just a friend, talk or going out with a group then get together and talk with everyone about these tips so this way you’re all ready and prepared to really have a safe night of fun.

Top 10 Halloween Safety Tips for Kids:

10. Don’t trick or treat by yourself

You might feel grown up going out there and trick or treating by yourself, but don’t. It doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 5. Going out by yourself this time of night can be dangerous. You never know what could happen because a lot of people are out this time of night so it’s best to go with a group. If you don’t have a group to go with you, then just going out with one or two others is fine but the main thing is, not to go out alone.

9. Review the routes before hand

It’s important to plan and review all of the routes beforehand. If you have a tablet or iPod, plan a route on the GPS system and save it. Take something with you that has GPS if possible or either a map. This way if you get lost you can find your way back again. Having a flash light can come in handy so that way you can look at the map or GPS system if needed.

8. Always look around you and be cautious

When you’re trick or treating stay alert and cautious and more so if you’re walking on the streets. I know this can be hard to do but this is a great way to prevent a possible bad situation. If you get scared or see a car following you, tell someone right away. Another thing is to pay attention to where you’re walking. It’s never a good idea to throw candy on the ground but many kids do it and this could cause an accident if you’re not watching where you’re walking.

7. Don’t go inside a stranger’s home under any circumstances.

If a stranger ask you to come inside to get some candy or to look at decorations, do not go inside. Only accept the treats on the outside. Explain to them that you cannot go inside, thank them but ask if they can give you the treat on the outside. You don’t know what is on the inside and you don’t want to find out. They might appear to be fine but you don’t want to take any chances.

6. Don’t eat candy in the dark.

Eating candy is one of the first things that I like to do but these days, you should wait until you get home to eat it. If you eat candy in the dark and without checking it first you might find a very unexpected and unwanted surprise in the bag. Have someone else check the bag and you check the bag as well to make sure everything is fine before digging in.

5. Wear bright clothes or reflective jewelry.

Have something on you that is bright. If you don’t have any clothes that might be bright try looking for some costume jewelry or even a hat. You can also find cool bright shoe strings and other things to put on you. Walking around with a flashlight on is another idea if you don’t have anything at all. This way at least people can see you at night. Don’t be fooled into thinking that they can see you if you’re with other friends who have bright clothes. They still might not see you. If you’re using a flash light to help with making you visible be sure to take some spare batteries. Look below and you can see the costume is bright and fun.

4. Don’t play in the streets.

Halloween is a very busy time of night. There might not be any cars for awhile but suddenly a car might come up and surprise you. It’s important to always stay on the sidewalk or either the walkway this time of night. Avoid playing street games or doing other activities that might cause you to be in the middle of the street. If you see your friends in the middle of the street tell them they need to get off it.

3. Avoid running.

When you get excited, you might want to run and more so if you’re going from house to house and would like to get candy before it gets too late. However, if you run then you could end up tripping over yourself or running into others which might cause an accident and could hurt someone so always walk.

2. Try to take a cell phone or iPod with you.

Try to have a way to communicate with your friends or parents when you’re out. See if you can borrow a cell phone, iPod or even a tablet. If you cannot borrow any of these things see if you can have a walkie talkie so that way you can have some way of communication if it’s needed. However, having a cell phone would be best so that way you can call someone if an emergency happens.

1. Try eating some healthy food before you go out.

Eating something healthy can help with making sure that your candy will last you longer and that you don’t eat it all in one night. I know that it’s tempting to eat all of your candy in one night but you should try your best to save some of it for the next day so you won’t get. Have something healthy before going out or eat a meal so you can make your candy last more than one night.
